Helping homeless people in Hong Kong
In 2019 Hong Kong’s economy was devastated by the protest movement. In 2020 the situation has become even worse because of Covid-19. Which is why 2019-2020 has seen a big increase in the number of homeless people sleeping in parks, under bridges and at McDonald’s.
MercyHK is an NGO of which I am a founding director. It was born in the Year of Mercy, 2016, as a ministry to help poor people. It has an accommodation centre on Cheung Chau Island and has been helping poor people – especially homeless people – in the Jordan/Yau Ma Tei area.
Since March 2020 MercyHK has rented a dozen rooms in Yau Ma Tei to provide accommodation for more than 20 homeless people.
And to provide jobs for these homeless people MercyHK has begun several stalls in Temple Street Market, Yau Ma Tei. The stalls sell second hand items and hopefully will help the workers take responsibility for paying their own room rent.
The project has been made possible by the support of hundreds of kind Hong Kong people who have donated items for the stalls and finance for the project. God bless all donors, workers and guests!
